SLDC INVITED TO DO EDUCATION WORK AT COLEBOURNE PRIMARY SCHOOL
October 2019: Monday 21 October saw us at Colebourne Primary School as part of their Culture Week. Artistic Director Sonia who is passionate about education and outreach work, led the school's assembly of about 360 students, introducing them to Kathak and Indian culture. This was followed by bespoke workshops to 120 students in smaller groups.
SONIA CHANDARIA TILLU NAMED AS ONE OF AKADEMI'S '40 UNDER 40' DANCERS
October 2019: SLDC is delighted to announce that Artistic Director Sonia Chandaria Tillu has been selected as one of the dancers in the '40 under 40' list published by UK's leading umbrella South Asian dance organisation Akademi.
The list has been compiled as part of Akademi's 40th anniversary celebration naming UK dancers to look out for. Says Sonia: "Thank you to Akademi for including me in your list. I am in truly esteemed company here and look forward to further contributing to UK's thriving South Asian dance and cultural landscape."
SLDC PERFORM KATHAK/ RAP PIECE AT BRAMALL MUSIC HALL, BIRMINGHAM
October 2019: On 17 October, Sonia Chandaria Tillu and Jaina Modasia performed on behalf of SLDC at the iconic Bramall Music Building, part of the University of Birmingham. The duo were invited to present their Kathak/ rap experimental piece which first premiered as part of SLDC's production 'Eleven, twelve, thirteen' at the Offbeat Festival this June. The Bramall performance was part of the Diwali celebrations organised by Sampad Arts and the India Institute.
SLDC PERFORMS AT MACCQUARIE GROUP'S DIWALI CELEBRATION
September 2019: SLDC partnered with the global financial company Macquarie Group presenting a Kathak dance group at their lunchtime Diwali celebration. Organised by Macquarie's Diversity Employee Network Group, the performance saw Jaina Modasia, Tulani Kayani-Skeef and Mehika Bajaj perform a series of Kathak pieces to a rapt corporate audience.
Says organiser Salena Lee of Macquarie group: "The event was a huge success... People keep coming to me to comment on how impressive the girls' performance was and how much fun they had. We will reach out again soon to book a workshop."
SONIA CHANDARIA TILLU PERFORMS AT CENTRE 151's ANNUAL CELEBRATION
September 2019: On 21 September, Sonia Chandaria Tillu was invited to perform at Centre 151's Mid-Autumn Celebration held on International Peace Day. The festival of food, performances and arts & crafts is an annual family event celebrating Vietnamese culture in the heart of multicultural Hackney, London. This was the second year Sonia performed at the Festival.
SONIA CHANDARIA TILLU AWARDED ARTIST RESIDENCY AT ARTS DEPOT FINCHLEY (LONDON)
September 2019: Sonia Chandaria Tillu has received an artist residency at the prestigious multi-art form venue Arts Depot Finchley.
Art Depot's residency programme engages emerging and established individuals and companies from different art form backgrounds, allowing them access to the venue's resources and expertise. Other recipients of the residency include LASTheatre and Edalia Day.
Sonia will be using the Creation Space to explore digital projection, creations with musicians and spoken word possibilities for her new family-friendly production Breaking Ground.
SLDC ANNOUNCES NEW PRODUCTION WITH STELLAR TEAM TO PREVIEW IN NOVEMBER 2019
September 2019: This month, SLDC has started work on a new dance piece on the life of Indian freedom fighter Aruna Asaf Ali. Conceived by Artistic Director Sonia Chandaria Tillu, the show will see SLDC collaborate with some exciting names including choreographer Jose Agudo, music composer Bernhard Schimpelsberger and dramaturg Lou Cope.
The show has been commissioned by Dance Hub Birmingham and will preview at MAC Birmingham in November 2019.
